The Talk. Someone's got some explaining to do before they do this. Ease your partner out of their shell.

Now, of course, not everyone was brought up with all the same expectations or types of social engagements, so whether invited to a ball, a fancy dinner party, or a formal duel, it’s best to know the rules of the game so as not to lose before you start. And yes, all of those forks have a specific function.

Are your manners impeccable and you are choosing to pass down to knowledge to someone in need ~~whether it kills them or not~~, or do you prefer to observe the untrained creatures in their natural state? Are you grateful for some guidance in this crazy world of fifteen forks, ten unintentional left-handed insults, eight handshakes, and five ways to say you need to use the restroom, or are you fighting this nonsense every stop of the way? Or are you both well-mannered, sophisticated bastions of gentility and there can only be one?

Whether you’re teaching beforehand, or it’s sink-or-swim within the situation itself, all eyes will be on you. Hang on to those handkerchiefs and ready the boutonnière--we’re going formal.

SITUATIONS & AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT

Balls / Dancing: There is a dance party coming up, and it would be unacceptable to be a wallflower. Court dance? Classic cotillion? Debutante ball? Better be sure you know all the latest moves and don’t have two left feet.

Dinner / Eating: Eating seems like such a simple thing, and then you realize there are so many ways you can do this wrong. Not sure where to even start on a 22-course molecular gastronomy meal? Pretty sure all those spoons will do the same thing? Are people messing with you when they say to eat that will your hands? Better learn, or you’re going to be hungry and embarrassed.

Duels / Rules of Engagement: A fight has been arranged, and of course there are rules to these things. How many paces must you walk? What spells are not acceptable? Do you even know how to hold a sword? Let’s hope you can learn before you might die.

Outings / Courtship: If someone is going to be taken to a fine establishment they had better know how they are expected to behave. Is it okay to yell during a horse race? When is it appropriate to clap during the ballet or an opera? How much are you expected to bring in tip money? And if you have to ask how much it is, you probably can’t afford it.

Politics / Cultural Differences: You’re going international, and it just quite possible everything you know about not offending someone is wrong. What is the correct angle for a bow? Are there any gifts that could come off as insulting to the recipient’s mother? Can you even speak first in this situation? Avoid international incident at all cost ~~or don’t~~.

Attire / Getting Dressed: Depending on where you’re going, they might not even let you through the door if you’re not dressed for the occasion. Can you get away with “dressing up” a pair of jeans? Can you walk or breathe adequately in that gown? Are you so blindly aware of what a mistake it is that you’ve picked something out in last season’s colors? First impressions are important, darling, so dress for it.

Parties / NIGHTMARE MODE: Parties are a culmination of all the possible ways in which you can either charm the masses or mess things up so horribly that you might actually have to change your name. Possibly your country of residence, depending. Good luck and godspeed.

Twilight Zone / Manners Reversal: Bringing someone with excellent manners and formal modes of behavior into a more casual or blue-collar situation can yield hilarious results. They will probably not thank you for it, though.

Wildcard: Literally any other fancy situation, these suggestions were just if you had no clue where to start~!

The Dating Game-Show Jamjar Meme

You know the story— a bunch of hot people get a TV show contract and show up to a closed set to spend a few weeks getting hot and bothered over the available bachelor/ettes. Now, forget that story.

Your character has been asked or forced to appear on a televised game show for the pleasure of an interdimensional audience. They must find love, or at least fail at it entertainingly enough for the audience to not vote them off the show! Perhaps elimination will mean death, or maybe it'll just send them to the Loser Corner where there are no cool drinks but also no more pressure to fuck.

Whatever flavor of game show you prefer, this meme is for a Love Island style drama— or perhaps even getting around the jealous love triangle vibes and sabotaging by romancing the whole cast. The world is your oyster.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Put a top level up. Describe what vibes you're looking for, as well as any key permissions. Don't be afraid to ask questions or brainstorm what kind of game show you want to play with. Hit each other up, and get your love game on.

GAME SHOW VIBES

A. Low Stakes: You *probably* agreed to be here, or otherwise aren't being threatened with death or the like. You're just here to find love! Maybe there's nobody for you back home or perhaps you just reached the end of your story, but you're absolutely game for the opportunity to catch feels on the other side. Maybe it's the type of show where you don't get sent home early, but all have to make it to the end together! Or maybe there's some "Second chance" situation on the Loser Corner. Whatever it is, it's a Love Vibe, low on the horror.

B. Fuck or Die: It's one of Those Games. You've got to make niceys with your cast— one or all of them— if you don't want to get eliminated, whether that's the literal or metaphorical sense. Elimination may lead to a Loser Corner set where there are fewer provisions for the cast, where people have to fight to survive, or maybe they're actually straight up dead and hanging out as ghosts. This is your fuck-horror option. Or maybe just a romance-horror option? up to you!

C. Fuck AND Die: JUST KIDDING. You're not allowed to make love on this show, even if you fall in it! You want that prize money? Then you've got to resist saucy scenarios, one-bed setups, and all sorts of aphrodisiacs with a cast that really butters your biscuit. If you can resist the urge to get jiggy with it, maybe you'll survive! Or win money! But aren't some risks worth taking...?

D. Catch 'Em All: You're on a show where you're not just supposed to love one— you've gotta connect with all! Maybe you won't actually fuck the whole cast, but the crew is counting on you to make TV-worthy connections with everyone, and they're willing to pull whatever bullshit challenges it takes to get that chemistry going.

E. Variety: Like multiple prompts above? Have a totally different idea? Go for it! Reference your favorite trashy dating shows!

SETTINGS:

I. Island! There's a Cool Fun Island and a Not So Cool Island for losers! Sure, this usually means tropical, but there's other kinds of islands out there too. Either way, you're thinking outdoorsy vibes and outdoorsy seclusion, with lots of places to explore.

2. Hotel! Or Mall, or Other Building! Basically, you're stuck indoors together, in a modern and urban chic setting.

3. Futuristic! Better hope there's not an impostor, because you're all the way out in space. Maybe it's a cruiser or perhaps it's an entire space station. This show just went intergalactic!

4. Town! You're trapped in some cute little village somewhere made just for this. Maybe there's even farmland! What challenges will there be?

5. Other! There's probably a million settings you could come up with, so don't limit yourself to these.

1. The Intro: You arrived at orientation together, and by circumstance or intent, you've reconvened after the days festivities. You barely know each other; maybe you can catch up in a secluded area around the set.

2. The Challenge: You're not just here to date, you're also here to do wacky partner activities together to bond! Pick a partner and get to rock climbing or bumper cars or synchronized swimming. You'll probably win a really cool prize if you do!

3. The Date: Speaking of cool prizes, maybe one of them is the chance to go on an actually nice date with a partner of your choice! Is this your first time together, or have you been trying to go steady as the days go by?

4. The Drama: Tensions are likely to run high in a setting like this! Are your characters beefing over a shared love interest, or has there been something as dramatic as a murder? All's fair on intergalactic television.

5. The Confession: Tensions are high, but the stakes have just gotten higher; you're in love, and you're ready to make it known, whether it's for the sake of your feelings or for a strategic move forward in the rankings. Do you make your feelings known in front of everyone, or steal away for a special moment?

6. The Sex: The easiest prompt. Do they get it on? You figure it out.

Who are you? (Some AU ideas)

❧ The Socialite: Your family is wealthy, well-heeled, and generally known in high society. Your life is a constant stream of eligible bachelor(ette)s, glamorous balls, holidays in the fashionable cities of Brighton and Bath, and social occasions with the elite. But, with all the eyes of the world on you... are you truly happy?

❧The Social Climber: You might be from the lower nobility, from a disgraced family, or, worst of all... *whispers* from trade. With hard work and a little ruthlessness, perhaps you can make a good match and connect with the right people to climb up through the ranks - or maybe you could just pull them down with you.

❧The Walking Scandal: A rake who sleeps with well-to-do ladies, ruining their virtue. A young lady who's no better than she should be, and may even be seen unchaperoned with a gentleman not of her acquaintance. Maybe it's nothing so dire - maybe you just like to spend time with the lower classes, or are a little too educated for a nice young lady. The social mores of the time are strict and unyielding, and stepping too far out of line can ruin not only your own life, but your whole family along with you.

❧An Officer and a Gentleman: Behind the bright colours and dazzling social life of the Regency is the harsh reality of the Napoleonic Wars, and there are a lot of military men around. Perhaps you joined up in the hopes of gaining a commission, winning a place in high society, making your parents proud. Perhaps you just wanted a steady paycheque. In any case, after all the horrors of the fighting, being back home can be an opportunity to cut loose - maybe a little too loose.

❧ The Chaperone: Mothers, fathers, widowers and maiden aunts. Your own days of full dance cards and courting are long past, and now it's time for you to look out for the younger generation, making sure that they don't get into too much trouble. But, of course, just because you've aged out of the more glamourous parts of society doesn't mean that nothing ever happens to you. Who knows what scandals might wait around the corner?

❧ The Staff: Every household has them: the silent masses who wait at table, keep the stables and garden neat, dress the ladies and bring the gentlemen their morning paper. They are often invisible to the upper class, but who knows more than the butler or the maid? And the politics of the kitchen and the scullery are often far more intricate and delicate than even the highest society balls.

What's going on? (The actual prompts)

1) I See Netherfield Is Let Again:
You have new neighbours! Naturally, the gossip is already swirling: who are they? Where are they from? Most importantly, is there an eligible bachelor who has two hundred a year? It would only be polite to drop by and say hello...

2) The Season Begins:The most important networking occasion of all: a society ball! A young lady's "coming-out" - her first ball and presentation to society - is of course the most important time of her life, but those who aren't so fresh to the scene can have an exciting time, too. Dance, talk, have a glass of wine and a canapé or two. Who knows - you just might meet the next most important person in your life.

3) A Proper Courtship:
Courtship in Regency society is not at all a whirlwind affair. Marriage is a business arrangement, and has to be entered into carefully. Chaperoned dates, talks among the family, and perhaps a few stolen moments in the gardens, if you're lucky. Do you even like one another?

4) An Improper Courtship:
For whatever reason, you - or someone else in your life - has fallen for someone entirely inappropriate. Perhaps the problem is their behaviour, the scandals that attend them, or the sort of company they keep. Perhaps they just aren't of the right social class - or, for that matter, of the right sex. Whatever the case, you had better be careful, because if this comes to light, the whole house of cards could come crashing down.

5) Scandal and Calumny:
Oh, no. What have you done? You've broken one of the many, many, many rules of society, and now you're ruined! Perhaps the other person is your partner in this scandal, or someone trying to help you through it. Perhaps they're just here to laugh at your fall from grace - or profit from it. Blackmail is, after all, a very lucrative occupation.

6) Homecoming:
Whether you have been away at war, at school, or in your new husband's home, it's time to come back and see your old friends and family. But how have you changed, in the time you've been away - and is home still the way that you left it?

7) Taking The Air:This is the era of the holiday. Perhaps you are going to the fashionable city spots - London, Bath, Brighton - to visit the high-class shops, take tea with people you may not see often, bathe in the local spas, and attend the theatre. Perhaps it's a visit to someone's country home, a hunting trip to the Highlands, or a seaside excursion to enjoy the new pavilions and pleasure beaches. So much to do, so much to see - and so many people to run into.

8) An Illicit Meeting:
Whether for the purposes of crime, spycraft, or just because it's socially inappropriate to be seen together, you two have arranged to meet in some secret spot, in disguise and hopefully unseen. There are all kinds of dark corners of Regency Britain where you can sneak away to - just don't get caught!

9) The Obligatory Marriage:
'Nuff said. It wouldn't be a Regency meme without the arranged marriage option, would it?
